McDonald’s Malaysia Files Lawsuit Against BDS Malaysia for Defamation Over Gaza Boycott

McDonald's Malaysia has initiated legal action against BDS Malaysia, a local chapter of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, accusing the group of defamation. The lawsuit, seeking damages of 6 million ringgit ($1.31 million), alleges that BDS Malaysia's social media posts linking McDonald's to Israel's military offensive in Gaza have harmed the fast-food chain's business.

McDonald's Malaysia licensee Gerbang Alaf Restaurants Sdn Bhd claims that BDS Malaysia incited the public to boycott McDonald's outlets through misleading social media posts. The posts reportedly connected the fast-food franchise, along with other companies, to Israel's actions in Gaza.

McDonald's Malaysia contends that the boycott campaign orchestrated by BDS Malaysia has resulted in financial losses, job cuts, and operational disruptions, including reduced operating hours and closures of some restaurants.

BDS Malaysia denies the allegations and asserts that its criticism is fair and accurate, emphasizing its commitment to addressing Israel's actions in Gaza. The group vows to defend itself in court, stating that it will not be silenced by legal threats.
