Meta Launches Llama API to Compete in AI Development Market

Meta Platforms (META.O) unveiled its new Llama API during its first AI developer conference, offering businesses an easier way to build artificial intelligence applications using its Llama models.

The Llama API aims to challenge existing offerings from OpenAI, Google, and newer low-cost players like China’s DeepSeek. “You can now start using Llama with one line of code,” said Chief Product Officer Chris Cox, emphasizing simplicity and accessibility.

Initially available in a limited preview, the API will expand more broadly in the coming weeks. Meta did not disclose pricing but stressed that developers would have full control over customized models, which can be hosted independently from Meta’s servers.

The move is part of Meta’s broader strategy to open up its AI ecosystem, promote innovation, and drive engagement across its platforms. CEO Mark Zuckerberg underscored the importance of flexibility and competition in AI development, stating, “Now as developers, you have the ability to take the best parts of the intelligence from different models and produce exactly what you need.”

Meta also launched a standalone AI assistant app and plans to trial a paid version of its chatbot later this year.
